What The Entangled Net means
In Snorri's telling, Loki hides after Baldr's death, sits by a waterfall, and invents the fishing net. When the gods approach he burns it and leaps into the river as a salmon. But the ash still holds the pattern. The gods copy it and catch him. Your plan may have failed, but it left a shape. Look at it. Even burned plans leave patterns.
The Entangled Net comes when a plan has failed and I would rather forget it. Burning it feels like the end of the matter and it is not. The shape of what I attempted stays visible: in what people saw me do, in the habits the attempt built, in the way I would go about it a second time. Others read that shape without effort. I can read it too, if I am willing to study something I would rather call finished.
In shadow, the card is denying accountability while standing in your own footprints. The ash is right there. Pretending it is not does not make it less legible. The card asks me to look at the trace I left: what people can still see, what it taught them about me, what I owe. The pattern is often more useful than the plan was.
I own the pattern my choices left behind.
When The Entangled Net appears in a reading
The Entangled Net turns up when I have moved on from a failure without examining it. In a reading I describe the failed plan as though it were a design: what it assumed, what it required, where it was load-bearing. Described that way it stops being an embarrassment and starts being information.
The tell is how quickly I want the subject changed. Everyone else can still see the shape whether or not I discuss it. A narrow, answerable question helps here: what did this cost someone other than me, and have I said so out loud.
The Entangled Net has a hopeful reading too. If the failed plan left a pattern, the pattern is a design, and a design can be built again on purpose, for a better reason, by someone who now knows how it works.

The Entangled Net in the Crossroads Spread
The Trickster Oracle guidebook’s three-card Crossroads Spread does not find the correct road. It exposes the structure of the choice: the threshold that is actually present, the route you overlooked, and the cost you have not counted. In each position this card tends to say:
- The Threshold. The threshold is a failed plan whose pattern is still visible.
- The Unexpected Route. The route is to read the pattern yourself before someone else uses it.
- The Hidden Cost. The cost is accountability you cannot burn. The ash holds the shape.
