What The Grimoire means

Some cunning folk worked from books: grimoires, almanacs, and notebooks in which recipes, charms, and observations accumulated into a personal body of knowledge.

Keep your own working book. Record what you tried and what genuinely helped. In shadow, the book replaces the person, and borrowed instruction is valued above lived evidence.

I write what I learn by living.

When The Grimoire appears in a reading

The Grimoire arrives when my own lived evidence is being outranked by borrowed instruction. The cure it offers is plain and a little old-fashioned: a working book of my own, where I note what I tried, what happened, and what I would change.

Advice from someone else, however good, is not the same as what I have found to be true in my own kitchen and my own week. When the card appears, I trust the entry I wrote over the one I read, and I write today's lesson down in my own words.

One small act of tending

Start or reopen a working notebook and write one entry: what you tried this week, and whether it helped.

The Grimoire in the Hearth Reading

The Hearth & Hedge guidebook’s three-card spread sorts one situation into what to guard, what to release, and what to feed. In each position this card tends to say:

  • Protect. Protect your own lived evidence.
  • Clear. Clear the borrowed advice that outranks it.
  • Tend. Write one entry in your working book.
