My 44-card emotion deck for adults, for naming, understanding, and working with what you feel. Four regions of eleven feelings, from Stress to Belonging, always picked face up. Description

I made this deck because I kept reaching for a word and finding only “fine” or “bad.” Most of us were handed a vocabulary of six or seven feelings and asked to live a whole life with it. When something larger moves through us, we call it stress and carry it around unnamed. Researchers who study emotional granularity, the ability to tell one feeling from its neighbors, have found that people who can name what they feel with precision often cope with hard moments differently, and in many studies better. The research is still young, but the everyday version holds up: a feeling you can name is a feeling you can do something with.

The Spectrum of Emotions is not an oracle deck. Nothing here predicts anything, and nothing is drawn blind. The 44 cards are always picked face up, because you are not asking the cards what you feel. You already know, or you are close. You are looking for the word. Use the deck alone with a journal, across a table with someone you trust, or in a session with a counselor, coach or facilitator who likes having something tangible to point at.

The cards sit in four regions of eleven, read as weather rather than as a grade. Unsteady Ground holds the feelings that arrive when things are uncertain, too much, or not yet safe. Low Country holds what we feel when something is lost, missing, or not what we hoped. Fire Line holds the feelings that rise when a boundary has been crossed. Open Field holds what we feel when we are met, safe, or moved. Every card carries its region, the plain emotion word, and a one-line essence. In the 104-page guidebook each card has six parts: What It Is, In the Body, Essence, What It Asks For, The Shadow, and one Ask Yourself question.

The guidebook’s five spreads are all picked face up, from the one-card Check-In, a true answer to “how are you,” to Across the Table, two people and two cards each, for couples, friends, family or a group.

You can see all 44 cards and their meanings in the card explorer. It is also the free face-up card picker the guidebook mentions: lay the deck out on screen, pick the card that fits, and read what it asks of you.

Created by me, Zara Grimm, for Idyllic Visions. I write the concept, the card meanings, the guidebook, and the practices, and I guide the visual development through an iterative digital workflow, shaping atmosphere, symbolism, and composition with precise creative direction. The feelings, their definitions, and the four regions are my own, informed by the work of Brené Brown, Robert Plutchik, and Lisa Feldman Barrett.
