The Yule Beasts: Winter Animal Oracle Deck

$42.97 on Etsy

My 40-card oracle of winter animals and the masked beasts of the old midwinter customs. The guidebook is honest about where each tradition comes from, how old it is where that is known, and what simply cannot be dated. It does not predict anything. It keeps you company through the long night and shows you what you are already carrying into it.

Description

I made this deck because the winter animals kept showing up: in the old customs I read about, in the field behind my house, at the feeder outside the window. Every one of them seemed to be carrying instructions. Not predictions. Instructions. How to rest. How to answer the knock at the door. How to keep a breathing hole open.

For most of human history midwinter was not a single holiday. It was a season to be survived, and the animals that moved through it, real and imagined, taught people how. Some were performed: neighbors in straw and sheepskin, a horse skull wrapped in ribbons carried to the door, Krampus with his bells. Some were prayed beside, like the ox breathing over the manger and the bees humming in a dark hive. And some simply endured out in the cold: the hare turning white, the chickadee dropping its own body temperature on the worst nights to spend less energy. Where a custom is genuinely ancient, the guidebook says so. Where it took shape in the nineteenth century, it says that too. The Cardinal’s card tells you plainly that its lore is modern.

The forty cards fall into three families. The Maskers (1-13) stand at the threshold: a challenge, a reckoning, a visitor you must decide whether to let in. The Sanctuary (14-26) keeps the hearth: shelter, service, devotion, and the warmth you keep for the people you love. The Frost-Walkers (27-40) hold the wild, each one a survival skill winter has already perfected. Every card carries its family, its title, and a two-line essence, so a single draw reads without the book. In the guidebook, each card has an insight rooted in its story or natural history, an essence, a shadow, an affirmation, a small practice, and two journal prompts.

Pull one at the start of a long evening and ask who is at your door tonight. The guidebook walks through four quiet movements (settle in, draw, read the card, carry it), four spreads from the single-card Threshold Draw to the five-card Twelve Nights Spread for the turn of the year, and a Winter Record page for keeping your own season of draws.

Every card also has its own page here on the site, with the guidebook meaning, what the card tends to be asking when it appears, how it reads in the Long Night Spread, and one small sideways move to try the same day. Read all forty Yule Beasts card meanings.

Created by me, Zara Grimm, for Idyllic Visions. I develop the concept, write the card meanings, the guidebook, and the practices, and guide the visual development through an iterative digital workflow, shaping atmosphere, symbolism, and composition with precise creative direction. The traditions are named and dated where the sources allow it; the interpretations are my own. Each order includes 40 oracle cards and a printed 96-page guidebook in a rigid two-piece box. Printed and shipped in the USA by my production partner.

The Yule Beasts is a tool for reflection and seasonal practice. It does not predict the future, diagnose any condition, or replace medical, mental health, or trauma care.
