What The Crossroads means
In Yorùbá tradition, Èṣù stands where roads meet, carrying messages that change meaning depending on where the listener stands. Nothing at the crossroads is fully lit, and that is the point. You are not confused. You dislike the cost of the choice. Pick a road knowing that choosing it quietly closes another, and that standing still is also a road.
I have never once drawn this card while feeling clear. It comes when I am standing at a fork I have described to friends as complicated, and the honest word would have been costly. Èṣù's crossroads is not a puzzle to solve. It is a place where every road is real and every road charges a toll, and the message changes depending on where I am standing when I hear it. The card is not asking me to find the road with no cost. It is asking me to stop pretending such a road exists.
In shadow, The Crossroads becomes paralysis dressed up as careful thinking. I know that costume well. A spreadsheet of pros and cons can run for weeks and feel like diligence, when it is really a way of never having to say the word no to either road. Standing still is also a choice, and it quietly closes doors too. If the same fork has been in front of me for a long time, the card is telling me I have probably already chosen and am waiting for someone else to say it out loud.

When The Crossroads appears in a reading
In a reading, The Crossroads points at a specific decision, and the first thing I do is write it down as two roads rather than a list of concerns. That alone changes the reading. A list can be reshuffled forever. Two roads have to be walked, and each one has a thing at the end of it I would be giving up.
The shadow of this card is careful thinking that never ends. Weighing can be a way of not choosing, and standing still has a cost of its own. If I have been at the same fork for weeks, I read that as the answer already arriving sideways.
When this card lands beside one about cost or appetite, I usually read the two as saying the same thing twice. When that happens I stop reading and go make the choice.

Say the road you are leaning toward out loud to one person today, and let them hear the cost in the same breath.
The Crossroads in the Crossroads Spread
The Trickster Oracle guidebook’s three-card Crossroads Spread does not find the correct road. It exposes the structure of the choice: the threshold that is actually present, the route you overlooked, and the cost you have not counted. In each position this card tends to say:
- The Threshold. The real choice is not the one you have been describing. Find the fork underneath it.
- The Unexpected Route. Standing still is a road too. Ask what choosing it deliberately would look like.
- The Hidden Cost. The cost you have been refusing to look at is the whole reason the choice feels impossible.
