Winter Solstice Ritual: The Turning Spread

3 cards · about 5 minutes · with The Yule Beasts Oracle

A three-card oracle spread to build a winter solstice ritual around: what you light, what you keep watch over through the longest night, and what you welcome back when the light turns.

Use this spread when

I lay this one in the week before the solstice, when I want to mark the longest night with something more than a candle and a vague feeling. The spread gives the rite its content. One card tells me what the candle is for, one tells me what I am sitting up with, and one tells me what I am welcoming when the year turns. Three cards, one evening, and a ritual that is about my actual life rather than a generic one.

How to lay it

  1. Hold the question loosely. "What should this solstice be about?" works better than "What will next year bring?"
  2. Shuffle and lay three cards face down, left to right, on the evening of the longest night or the week before it.
  3. Turn The Candle and decide the act. Do it that night if you can, or fix the day you will.
  4. Turn The Vigil and write one line: what I am keeping watch over. Then put the pen down and sit with it, no fixing.
  5. Turn The First Light last and say the welcome out loud, in plain words, before you feel ready. Then light the candle.

What each position means

  • 1The CandleWhat you are choosing to light this year: the small deliberate act the whole rite is built around.

The first card names the act, and I keep it literal. Not an intention, a thing done with the hands: a meal made from what is in the house, a letter, a promise spoken to one other person, a corner cleared. The solstice rites that stay with me were all built around one small physical act, and this card picks it.

  • 2The VigilWhat you are keeping watch over through the longest night, the thing that needs your attention rather than your commentary.

The middle card is what I sit up with. I keep this vigil in silence, and the card usually names something that does better without my interference: a change in a person I love, a slow thing in myself, a grief. I read it as an instruction to be present and quiet, not to document.

  • 3The First LightWhat you are welcoming back when the light turns, named out loud before there is any evidence of it.

The third card is the announcement. After the solstice the light begins to return in increments too small to feel, so the welcome has to be spoken on faith. The card tells me what to name, and I say it plainly to whoever is in the room. This is the part of the rite people skip, and it is the part that turns a candle into a ritual.

A worked example with Yule Beasts

Here is how the spread reads with three cards from The Yule Beasts Oracle. Suppose I am wondering what to make a solstice evening about after a scattered year, with no budget for anything and a house that has not felt like mine since summer, and the three cards are The Christmas Spider, The Midnight Cattle, and The Christmas Rooster.

The Christmas Spider oracle card from The Yule Beasts Oracle

1 · The Candle

The Christmas Spider

Humble threads turn silver by morning

The Candle is the spider's web, and the card settles the budget question at once: the act is made from what is already in the house. The widow's tree was dressed overnight from silk the spiders already had. So the act is supper from the cupboard, served on the good plates, with nothing bought. The card is not sentimental about scarcity. The thread is in my hands, and the postponing is what stands between me and the silver.

2 · The Vigil

The Midnight Cattle

Some holiness stays hidden; let the barn keep its hour

The Vigil is the barn at midnight, and I read it as a warning about my habits. Something sacred is happening in my life that I keep wanting to check on and narrate to friends, and the card says the animals kneel without an audience. What I keep watch over is a private change in myself that has gone better since I stopped inspecting it. The vigil is not creeping in to listen.

3 · The First Light

The Christmas Rooster

Announce the light before you can see it

The First Light is the rooster crowing at midnight into a black sky, and the card says how to do the welcome: say it before there is any sign of it. The house not feeling like mine is what I have kept quiet about, and the announcement is one plain sentence, that I am going to make this a home again by spring, said at the table while the sky is still dark. The crow is part of how the day arrives.

Read together

The candle is cooking with what I have. The vigil is a change in me that does better unwatched, kept company in silence for one long night. The first light is one sentence said at the table, that I am going to make this house mine again, before anything proves it. Nothing in the rite costs money, and the whole of it fits in an evening.
