What Chemistry Is Data means
Chemistry is neither meaningless nor an oracle. A strong pull tells you that someone activates desire, novelty, familiarity, fantasy, or reward in you. It says nothing on its own about kindness, reliability, shared values, emotional availability, or how the two of you handle a hard week. This card respects what your body reports and refuses to hand it the final decision. Ask two questions at once. What am I feeling? What am I observing?
Chemistry Is Data arrives early. A first date that ran four hours, a text thread that has not stopped since Tuesday, a feeling the person describes as "I just know." Sometimes it arrives later, in a long relationship where the chemistry has gone quiet and the person is reading that silence as a verdict too. I read the card as a demotion, in the kindest sense. The pull is being promoted from witness to judge, asked to decide whether this person is kind, whether they will show up, whether a hard month with them would be survivable, and it has no information about any of that. It knows what it knows. The card hands it back a smaller, truer job.
In shadow, this becomes worshipping the chemistry, or distrusting it so completely you only date people who bore you. The worship looks like devotion and runs on a single data point. The pull was strong, so everything that follows gets filed under the pull: the cancelled plans, the week of silence, the thing they said about your friend. The distrust is the convert's version. The person was burned once by a strong pull and now treats any spark as a warning, chooses the sensible match, and sits across from someone perfectly decent wondering why the room feels like a waiting area. Both have stopped gathering information. One because the answer was already yes. One because it was already no.
My body's yes is a starting point, not a verdict.
When Chemistry Is Data appears in a reading
The person who draws Chemistry Is Data is usually trying to get me to confirm something. "It felt so right, didn't it?" I do not answer that, because I was not there and neither, in a sense, were they. They were in the feeling. So I ask for the other reel: what did this person do, in the four hours, that I could have seen on a security camera? Did they ask a question and wait for the answer? Did they pay attention when the server came by? What happened the one time the person said no to something small? The camera reel is usually shorter than the feeling reel, and it is the one that predicts anything.
My own practice with this card is to keep a second column running for the first few weeks of any strong pull, and to keep it boring. Not feelings. Verbs. Called when they said they would. Changed the plan without telling me. Asked about my sister. Laughed at something unkind. I write them down the same day so the pull does not get to edit them later, because it will try. After a month I read the column and ask one question: would I want this list from a friend's new person? The pull does not get a vote on that question. It already had its say.
Beside Slow the Pace, I read the pair as a plain instruction: strong signal, lengthen the observation window. Where I keep Chemistry Is Data distinct from Limerent Fog is the amount of real contact involved. This card tends to come up when there has been plenty, and the trouble is what the person is doing with it. The fog card comes up when there has been very little, and the feeling has built a whole person out of two conversations and a profile.
One small honest step
Tell a friend three things this person has actually done, in plain verbs, without describing how any of it felt, and listen to what the friend hears.
Chemistry Is Data in the You, Me, Us Spread
The Second Question guidebook’s three-card love reading is You, Me, Us, the classic layout with the positions changed so that none of them asks for mind reading. The first card is what I bring, the second is what their behavior has actually shown so far, and the third is what the dynamic needs for its next honest step. In each position this card tends to say:
- What I Bring. As What I Bring, the card says you have walked into this connection with the pull already in the judge's seat, and it is going to rule on things it has no information about unless something else is let into the room.
- What Their Behavior Shows. As What Their Behavior Shows, it asks you to run the plain reel: what they did, kept, asked, and how they handled a small no, because that record is the part of the evidence the chemistry cannot supply.
- What the Dynamic Needs. As What the Dynamic Needs, it suggests the next step is time and ordinary situations, a bad day, a plan that falls through, a disagreement about nothing, so that the feeling has something to be checked against.
Journal prompts
- What does the chemistry tell me, and what can it not possibly tell me yet?
- When has a strong pull been right, and when has it been loud?
