Use this spread when
I lay this one when nothing is actually wrong and nothing is moving either. That is a harder kind of stuck than a crisis, because there is no emergency to force the issue. This spread assumes the stillness is doing a job for me, and goes looking for what that job is.
How to lay it
- Hold the question loosely. "What is not moving here?" works better than "Why am I like this?"
- Say out loud how long it has been this way before you shuffle.
- Lay three cards face down, left to right.
- Turn one and two and write a line under each. Do not soften the second card into something more reasonable.
- Turn three. Read the three together, then decide whether the thing you fear losing is worth what the stillness costs.
What each position means
- 1What Is StuckThe thing that has not moved, described plainly.
The honest shape of the standstill, without the story about why it is reasonable. I read this card as a description rather than a verdict. Naming the stuck thing in one sentence is often the first useful thing that happens here.
- 2What Would Disrupt ItThe move that would break the pattern open.
Not the sensible next step. The disruptive one. This card names the thing that would actually change the conditions, and it is allowed to be uncomfortable or slightly ridiculous. Reasonable moves are what have kept the situation this still.
- 3What I Fear LosingWhat the stillness is protecting.
The reason I have not made the move. Usually something real: a comfort, an identity, a version of myself that only exists while nothing changes. This position is why the spread works. Stuck almost always has a beneficiary.
A worked example with Trickster
Here is how the spread reads with three cards from the Trickster Oracle. Suppose I am asking why a body of work has sat untouched for most of a year, and the three cards are Sticky Escape, The Sacred Fire, and The Shed Skin.

1 · What Is Stuck
Some traps are fed by the struggle they provoke.
What is stuck is not the work. It is my method of getting unstuck, which has been more effort applied in the same direction. Br'er Rabbit sticks worse with every swing at the tar baby. The card says some traps feed on the struggle they provoke, which reframes a year of trying as a year of tightening.

2 · What Would Disrupt It
If you steal fire, be prepared to carry heat.
The disruption is claiming the capacity I have decided I am not allowed to have. Prometheus carried the ember down knowing the price. The card does not pretend this is free. Stolen fire is heavy, and its shadow is grabbing the power while declining the responsibility, which is the version of this I would prefer.

3 · What I Fear Losing
What you outgrew still looks like you.
What I fear losing is the old shape, which is lying on a warm stone and still has my outline. Being between shapes is newer and more exposed than I would like, and the card is clear that the exposure is the cost of the change rather than evidence it went wrong. It also names the shadow: performing the rebirth without actually changing.
Read together
A year of effort in the same direction has been feeding the thing it was meant to solve. What would move it is claiming a capacity I have been treating as off limits, and what has stopped me is that doing so retires a version of myself I am still fond of. The honest first step is small: one piece of the work made in the new way, badly, without announcing it.
If something has been still for longer than you would like, lay the three cards now. The reading tool below lays these same three positions with The Trickster Oracle.
