Use this spread when

I lay this at real transitions, the ones with a before and an after: a move, a new job, the end of something, becoming responsible for someone. It sits close to Release, Keep, Begin and it is not the same spread. That one is for a season you are choosing. This one is for a threshold you are already standing in, and the third card faces forward into something you cannot see yet.

How to lay it

  1. Hold the question loosely. "What am I actually carrying across?" works better than "Will this turn out to be right?"
  2. Name the threshold in one sentence before you shuffle. Say where the before ends.
  3. Lay three cards face down, left to right.
  4. Turn one and two and write a line under each. Be specific about roles, habits, commitments, and routines rather than vague qualities.
  5. Turn three. Read it as what is waiting on the other side, then read all three as one crossing.

What each position means

  • 1What to LeaveWhat belongs to the old side, even if I am attached to it.

The thing that does not survive the crossing, or should not. Often a role or a way of being useful that made sense before. This card is rarely about objects.

  • 2What to CarryWhat is worth the weight.

The part of the old life that should come across. Transitions make people drop good things in the rush, and this card names one worth the trouble.

  • 3What to MeetWhat is waiting on the other side.

What I will have to deal with once I arrive, which is usually not what I have been preparing for. Read this one as a heads-up rather than a promise.

A worked example with Hearth & Hedge

Here is how the spread reads with three cards from the Hearth & Hedge Oracle. Suppose I am leaving a job I held a long time, and the three cards are The Lost Object, The Written Charm, and The Moon.

The Lost Object oracle card from the Hearth & Hedge Oracle

1 · What to Leave

The Lost Object

What is lost wants finding

What to leave turns out to be a search I have been running for years. Cunning folk found lost things by method and memory, and the card applies that to the other kind of loss, a version of myself I keep retracing my steps toward. Its warning is exact: a small missing thing can start carrying the weight of a much larger one.

The Written Charm oracle card from the Hearth & Hedge Oracle

2 · What to Carry

The Written Charm

Words carried with intention

What to carry is a sentence. Cunning folk folded words small and kept them close, and there is one line from this job worth writing on a card and putting in a pocket. The shadow keeps me honest, because a charm I never live by is only paper.

The Moon oracle card from the Hearth & Hedge Oracle

3 · What to Meet

The Moon

Light changes, the moon remains

What I will meet is a phase, not a verdict. The first months after this crossing may be waning or dark, and treating them like a full moon is how people conclude they made a mistake. The card's demand is that I name the phase honestly and act to match it, rest included.

Read together

The crossing is simpler than I thought and different than I expected. Leave the search for an old self, carry one sentence worth living, and expect a dark phase on the other side that is not evidence of a wrong turn. That last part is the reading. I would have read a quiet month as failure, and it is just the moon.
