Use this spread when

I lay this when a decision has hardened into two columns and the totals keep matching. The first two cards describe the options honestly, which is useful on its own. The third is the card that earns the spread, because a decision that will not resolve is usually missing a piece rather than a tiebreaker.

How to lay it

  1. Hold the question loosely. "What is each of these two roads actually like?" works better than "Which one should I pick?"
  2. Name the two options out loud before you shuffle, so the cards have something to land on.
  3. Lay three cards face down, left to right: option one, option two, and what you are missing.
  4. Turn one and two and write a line under each. Resist ranking them yet.
  5. Turn three last. Read all three together, then check whether the question itself has changed.

What each position means

  • 1Choice AThe honest texture of the first option, not the brochure version.

What life on this road is actually like, including its ordinary costs. I read it as a description rather than a recommendation. A card that looks unappealing here is not a verdict against the option.

  • 2Choice BThe honest texture of the second option.

The same treatment for the other road. These two cards are most useful when compared rather than scored, because the real difference between two options is usually a texture rather than a total.

  • 3What I Am MissingThe piece that is on neither list.

What both columns left out: a person, a cost, a motive, a third road. This is the card to sit with longest. If a decision has been stuck for weeks, the answer is more often here than in the first two.

A worked example with Hearth & Hedge

Here is how the spread reads with three cards from the Hearth & Hedge Oracle. Suppose I am deciding whether to take a job in a new city or stay where I am, and the three cards are The Threshold, The Dwelling, and The Scrying Glass.

The Threshold oracle card from the Hearth & Hedge Oracle

1 · Choice A

The Threshold

Choose what may enter

The first road reads as a door, which fits. The card is neither excited about the move nor against it. It says a move is a decision about what crosses in with me, and it names the two ways a threshold fails: wide open or bolted shut.

The Dwelling oracle card from the Hearth & Hedge Oracle

2 · Choice B

The Dwelling

Home is a tended container

The second road is not really staying. It is tending. My rooms hold the shape of my days and will keep that shape only if I work on them. The warning lands squarely: expecting walls to do the work of a boundary I have not actually set.

The Scrying Glass oracle card from the Hearth & Hedge Oracle

3 · What I Am Missing

The Scrying Glass

Soft focus reveals the pattern

What I am missing is the pattern behind both columns. I have been staring at one detail, the salary line, until the shape went invisible. The card also asks me to sort my reading into what I observed and what I added out of hope or dread, and the second pile is larger than I expected.

Read together

The two roads turn out to be one question asked twice: what am I willing to let in, and what am I willing to tend? The missing piece was not a number. It was that I had been holding a soft-focus problem in hard focus. The spread did not pick the city. It sent me back with a better question, which is what a stuck decision usually needs.

If your own decision has two even columns, lay the three cards now. The reading tool below lays these same three positions with the Hearth & Hedge Oracle.
