What Turn Toward means

Most connection happens in small reaches for attention or warmth, and in whether anyone turns toward them. Some reaches are plain, "can we talk." Most are small enough to miss: a joke, a sigh, a hand on a shoulder. Relationships are built out of thousands of these moments. Notice ordinary invitations before waiting for grand romance. For a single reader, that means answering the invitations in your life instead of waiting to be pursued.

Turn Toward is for the person waiting for a large gesture and stepping over a hundred small ones. The partner who reads a headline out loud at breakfast is reaching. The friend who sends a photo of a dog is reaching. The person drawing the card has been so focused on whether anyone is going to show up in a big way that they have stopped answering the small knocks, and they report feeling unloved in a house full of people tapping on the door. I read the card as a change of scale. The question it asks is not whether anyone is pursuing you. It is whether you noticed the sigh from the other room, and what you did about it.

In shadow, this becomes reaches that are really demands for constant attention, or reaches so indirect nobody could reasonably catch them. The first kind wears out a room. Every sigh requires a response, every silence is a withdrawal, and the other person learns that turning toward is a full-time job with no breaks, so they start turning away to rest. The second kind is the reach that is designed to fail. A hint so faint it could be denied, a mood with no words attached, a door left open a quarter inch and then a grievance when nobody walked through it. The person feels unmet and is partly right. They were also unreadable.

I can notice the small reach and meet it.

When Turn Toward appears in a reading

When this card shows up, I ask the person to recall the last three times someone in their life tried to get their attention in a small way, and what they did. They can rarely remember three, which is the reading. The reaches were there. They did not register as reaches because they were not shaped like romance. I also ask the harder version: the last three times the person themselves reached, and whether anyone could have known that was what was happening. "I was hoping he'd notice I was quiet" is not a reach anyone can catch. It is a test with the answers hidden.

My practice with the card is to answer one small bid per day on purpose, and to make one of my own without disguise. The answering is easy once I am looking: the headline gets a response, the photo gets a reply that is more than a thumb, the sigh gets a "what's up." The making is harder, because an undisguised reach can be declined. "Come sit with me for a minute" has a no available. I make it anyway, and I let the no be a no rather than a verdict. Over a few weeks the house gets warmer, not because anything large happened but because the small doors are being answered.

Beside Reciprocal Interest, I read the pair as a reminder that the arrows I am counting might be smaller than I have been looking for. Where I keep Turn Toward distinct from Many Ways to Care is that care is about the form affection takes, and this card is about the response to an invitation, whatever form it took. A person can be fluent in every kind of care and still miss the sigh, because they were busy delivering care instead of receiving a bid.

One small honest step

Reply to one small reach today with more than you normally would, a question instead of a nod, a minute instead of a glance, and notice what the other person does with the extra room.

Turn Toward in the You, Me, Us Spread

The Second Question guidebook’s three-card love reading is You, Me, Us, the classic layout with the positions changed so that none of them asks for mind reading. The first card is what I bring, the second is what their behavior has actually shown so far, and the third is what the dynamic needs for its next honest step. In each position this card tends to say:

  • What I Bring. As What I Bring, the card says you are entering this connection watching for large signs and may have been stepping over the small ones that were already being offered.
  • What Their Behavior Shows. As What Their Behavior Shows, it asks you to look at what they do with your small reaches, the joke, the question, the hand on the arm, because the pattern of those responses is a clearer record than any declaration.
  • What the Dynamic Needs. As What the Dynamic Needs, it points to a few small, plainly made reaches on your side, and to answering the ones that come back, as the way the bridge gets built one plank at a time.
