Use this spread when

Repair matters more than avoiding every fight, and it can be smaller than people think. I use this spread after an argument that ended badly, when I can feel myself building a case for why I was right. The spread interrupts the case. It looks at the rupture itself, asks for my part without asking me to take all of it, and finds one opening I could offer first. It works for partners, family, and friends, and it does not require the other person to read it with me.

How to lay it

  1. Hold the question loosely. "What would help us repair this?" works better than "Who was right?"
  2. Shuffle and lay three cards face down, left to right, once you are calm enough to read.
  3. Turn The Rupture and write the moment something broke, not the topic of the fight.
  4. Turn My Part and write one specific thing you contributed. Stop at one.
  5. Turn The Opening last and choose a step small enough to take when the time is right.

What each position means

  • 1The RuptureWhat actually broke, as distinct from what the fight was about.

The first card names the real break. The fight may have been about dishes or a plan or a comment. The rupture is usually something else: a moment one of us felt dismissed, cornered, or left. I name that moment, because it is what the repair has to reach.

  • 2My PartYour honest share of it, no more and no less.

The middle card asks for my part, and I keep it proportionate. Not a confession of everything, which is its own way of ending the conversation, and not zero, which is the case I was building. Usually it is one specific thing I did, said, or did not do. Sometimes my part is simply recognizing where I tried to fix something that was not mine to fix.

  • 3The OpeningThe smallest sincere move that could start the repair.

The third card points at a first step, and I look for a small one. One honest sentence, a reset, a message, a cup of coffee set down next to someone. The opening is mine to offer. Whether it is taken is theirs, and the card does not promise it will be.

A worked example with Table of Connection

Here is the repair spread laid with three cards from The Table of Connection Oracle. Suppose I am wondering how to repair things with my partner after we fought in my parents' driveway and I walked off down the street, and the three cards are Sanctuary Pause, The Escape Hatch, and The Micro-Repair.

Sanctuary Pause oracle card from The Table of Connection Oracle

1 · The Rupture

Sanctuary Pause

A pause can prevent a rupture

The Rupture is not the argument about leaving early. It is what the walk felt like from the driveway: he was left standing there, unsure whether the argument was over or whether I was coming back. The card separates a pause from a disappearance, and from his side it looked like the second one. Its edge is the break that runs long and leaves someone else to explain where you went.

2 · My Part

The Escape Hatch

Movement lets the panic pass through

My Part is how I left, not that I left. The urge to move was real and the walk itself was not wrong; it let the charge pass. What I did badly was go without a word, which the card names as fleeing in a rush instead of moving on purpose. My part is one missing sentence: that I needed a break and intended to come back.

3 · The Opening

The Micro-Repair

Repair matters more than perfection

The Opening is one honest sentence, offered first, without relitigating who was right about leaving early: "I'm sorry I walked off without saying I was coming back." The card warns against adding a but to the end of it. If he wants to talk about the evening after that, we can, from a calmer place.

Read together

The fight was about the time, and the rupture was about a walk that looked like leaving. My part is one missing sentence, not the whole evening. The opening is that sentence, said first and left to stand. Next time the urge to walk arrives, the repair is built in: "I need ten minutes outside, I'll be right back."
