Use this spread when
I use this one when the word for what I am in keeps changing depending on the day. Mixed signals, a new thing with no name, a text thread that is warm for a week and then goes dark. The guidebook's full version lays five cards. This cut keeps the three that do the work: the camera, the overlay, and the choice. The camera card is what a stranger could verify. The overlay is everything I have painted on top of that, hope and fear and the ex's face. The choice card is the deck's answer to "where is this going": it does not know, and it points out that one direction is still mine to set.
How to lay it
- Hold the question loosely. "What can I actually see here, and what is mine to decide?" works better than "Where is this going?"
- Shuffle and lay three cards face down in a row: What Is Real Now, What I Am Adding, My Choice.
- Turn the first card and write the connection as a plain record a stranger could check: how often, who reaches, what has been said about what this is.
- Turn the second card and write the one thing you believe about this person that you have not actually seen them do.
- Turn the third card and name a move that needs nothing from them: a question, a date by which you will stop waiting, a plan for the next quiet week.
What each position means
- 1What Is Real NowWhat you can actually observe about this connection today, as a camera would record it.
The plain record, with no motives attached. How often you see each other, who reaches, what has been said out loud about what this is, how a small no was handled. I write it as a stranger would, because a stranger would not add the part where the late reply means something. If the record is thin, that is the reading. Thin is information.
- 2What I Am AddingThe hope, fear, projection, or expectation shaping how you read it.
The layer on top of the record that came from me. The future I have sketched after two weekends. The old ending I am bracing for. The version of this person I built out of a profile and a good night. None of it makes the attraction false. It means some of what feels obvious was painted at home, and this card asks me to look at the paint.
- 3My ChoiceThe decision or action available to you now, before the other person decides anything.
The one move that does not depend on them. Ask what this is. Set a date by which I will stop waiting. Decide what I will do with a quiet week instead of decoding it. The card does not predict their answer. It returns the pen to my hand, which, in a situationship, is usually the thing that has gone missing.
A worked example with The Second Question
Here is the spread with three cards from The Second Question. Seven weeks, four nights together, and no conversation about what any of it is. She texts every day for a stretch and then goes quiet for four, and I have a theory for each quiet. Suppose I am wondering what I can actually see here and what is mine to decide, and the three cards are Mixed Signals, Limerent Fog, and Choose Yourself.

1 · What Is Real Now
Inconsistency is not a riddle. It is information.
What Is Real Now is warm for three days and gone for four, six times since September. The card refuses to treat that as a puzzle. Inconsistency is already an answer about where things stand, whatever her private reasons, and I do not get to know the reasons from here. The camera version of this connection is short: four nights, daily texts in bursts, nothing said about what it is. The edge the card names is mine: I have been cracking a code instead of asking, and one busy week has become a betrayal in my head twice.

2 · What I Am Adding
Intensity magnifies whatever is still unknown.
What I Am Adding is a future built on very little evidence. The card counts hours, and the count is humbling: perhaps thirty in the same room, against weeks of thinking. I know what she probably meant by the heart on Tuesday, what her mother is like, what a trip together would be, and I have met her four times. The fog is not a character flaw. It is what imagination does with a few bright pieces and a lot of empty space. Its edge is reading every delay as a clue, and I have been doing that with a notebook.

3 · My Choice
Your agency begins where the waiting ends.
My Choice is to stop organizing the week around her next message. The card is careful here: choosing myself does not mean leaving, and it does not mean a speech about boundaries. It means asking directly what this is, once, and deciding in advance what I will do with the answer or with the silence. The edge would be using the phrase as a cover for withdrawal, going cold to feel strong. That is not a choice. That is the same waiting with my back turned.
Read together
The record is thin and inconsistent. Most of the relationship has been happening in my head. The choice is one plain question, asked once, with a date by which I stop waiting for the answer. Nothing here tells me what she wants. It tells me the direction I have been refusing to set, and that I can set it on a Tuesday.
If you cannot say what this is and you have a theory for every quiet week, lay the three cards now. The reading tool below lays these same three positions with The Second Question.
