Shadow Work: The Shadow Spread

3 cards · about 5 minutes · with The Gold in the Dark

A three-card shadow work spread that treats the hidden part as something with a job. What you hide, what hiding it protects, and what it actually wants.

Use this spread when

I reach for this one when I notice myself managing an impression harder than the room requires. Something is being kept out of view, and I have a sense of what. The spread does not drag it into the light. It asks three fair questions: what is hidden, what the hiding is for, and what the hidden thing would ask for in a normal voice.

How to lay it

  1. Hold the question loosely. "What am I keeping out of this?" works better than "What is wrong with me?"
  2. Shuffle and lay three cards face down, left to right.
  3. Turn What I Hide and name the hidden thing in one plain word, not a polite one. Then read the entry.
  4. Turn What It Protects and write what the hiding buys you. Be fair to the strategy. It was probably smart once.
  5. Turn What It Wants last, and write the request in four words. Then read all three together as one sentence about a part of you with a job.

What each position means

  • 1What I HideThe quality, want or feeling you keep out of sight, in this situation or in general.

I let this card be specific. Not "my dark side," which is vague enough to be safe, but the ambition, the need, the temper, the appetite. The card usually names something I have a polite word for, and the polite word is part of the hiding.

  • 2What It ProtectsWhat the hiding keeps safe: the role, the relationship, the version of you that gets approved of.

Hiding is work, and nobody does that much work for nothing. This card names what the effort buys: a reputation, a relationship, or a very old safety that stopped being needed years ago. The strategy was usually smart once.

  • 3What It WantsWhat the hidden part would ask for, in plain words, if it were allowed to speak.

This is the card that turns the spread from an audit into an opening. The hidden thing is not trying to ruin me. It wants something, and the want is usually modest once it is said plainly: to be seen, to take up room, to make the thing, to say no. I write its request in four words if I can.

A worked example with Gold in the Dark

Here is how the spread reads with three cards from The Gold in the Dark. Suppose I am wondering why I describe a project I care about as "a little thing I am playing with" to everyone who asks, and the three cards are The Gold in the Dark, The Guard Dog, and The Unmade Thing.

The Gold in the Dark oracle card from The Gold in the Dark

1 · What I Hide

The Gold in the Dark

Not everything you buried was ugly. Some of it was the best of you.

What I hide is ambition, and the card refuses to let me call it anything gentler. It says the frightening part of this work is not the pettiness I might find but the size of what I put away, and that taking it back means being visible, with nobody coming to authorize it.

2 · What It Protects

The Guard Dog

It is still guarding a house you moved out of years ago.

The hiding protects me from criticism, and the card names the mechanism. A strategy learned in a house where it was necessary, still patrolling a fence with nothing behind it. The card warns me not to fire it, since a fired guard only goes underground.

3 · What It Wants

The Unmade Thing

You did not fail to finish it. You were afraid to start it.

What it wants is to make the thing badly. The card corrects my vocabulary first: the project is not unfinished, it is unstarted, and unstarted is fear of being judged while the perfect version stays safe in my head. The request, in four words, is thirty minutes, permission to be bad.

Read together

The hidden part is ambition, the hiding is an old guard that still thinks criticism is dangerous, and the want is embarrassingly small: half an hour of making the real thing badly, and one sentence to a friend that does not contain the word "little." Nothing here needs a breakthrough. It needs a timer and a plainer noun.
